SharePoint is a great tool used for developing "content management & collaborative" applications.
Though it has been in the market for quite some time now. The most famous versions are :-
1. SharePoint 2007
2. SharePoint 2010
3. SharePoint 2013
According to me, though 2013 is current version which is very hot and in demand, you should begin from SharePoint 2010.
Logic is 2007 is very old (lot has changed since then) and 2013 is next step to 2010.
Starting from 2010 and keeping an eye on 2013, will help you in many ways.
1. Core concepts will be clear.
2. You will appreciate more, or to say actually see whats different in 2013.
3. Still a lot of applications are in 2010, so when you start work for any customer, you can do better.
4. Can't migrate SharePoint 2007 to SharePoint 2013. You have to bring to 2010 before you migrate your application to 2013.
